The Museo Nacional del Prado presides over one of the most visited tourist itineraries in the capital: the Paseo del Arte. In addition to Velázquez's Las Meninas and Goya's Los fusilamientos del 3 de mayo, in its rooms you can see masterpieces of the Spanish, Italian and Flemish schools. The Prado has a valuable collection of 8600 paintings and more than 700 sculptures. It is advisable to consult a guide and prepare the visit before entering the museum. The Prado Museum has the most complete collection of Spanish painting in the world highlighting artists such as Velázquez, Goya, El Greco and Sorolla among many others. We also find very important examples of Italian painting, essential to understand the transition from medieval art to the Renaissance and also very influential in the Spanish Baroque art. A must visit for all art lovers. 💡Curiosities On November 19, 1819, the Museo del Prado opened its doors for the first time. Thanks to the support of Maria Isabel de Braganza, wife of Ferdinand VII, the building that Juan de Villanueva had designed as the Cabinet of Natural History finally housed an important part of the royal collections. Over the years, private donations and purchases increased the collection of the art gallery. During the Civil War, the works of art were protected from possible bombardment with sandbags on the first floor of the museum. Finally, on the recommendation of the League of Nations, the collection traveled first to Valencia and then to Geneva, from where it had to return quickly to Madrid after the outbreak of World War II.
