It occupies the old palace where Carlos I and Isabel of Portugal resided and where their daughter Doña Juana, later founder of the convent, was born. She herself is buried in a chapel, with praying funerary sculpture. Its facade, in Plateresque style, and the magnificent Renaissance staircase, are the most interesting original elements. The interior was completely renovated in the 18th century by Diego de Villanueva. In the cloister, the structure and many decorative elements of the Plateresque palace are preserved, such as fresco paintings, especially the tapestries woven in Brussels on Rubens cartoons representing the Apotheosis of the Eucharist. 💡Curiosities In this monastery, currently managed by Patrimonio Nacional, lived Doña Juana and later her sister María, empress dowager, who died here in 1603. The Monastery has been listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest, also obtaining the distinction of European Museum of the Year 1987. Its latest renovation, undertaken during 2020 and 2021, has enabled a major renovation to be carried out.
